For Aiden Fiterstein, a senior at Roslyn High School, life's true joy lies in extending a helping hand to those in need. Challenges of High School and Finding Purpose

During his time in Panama, Aiden worked with Floating Doctors, an organization dedicated to delivering essential healthcare to impoverished coastal communities. His efforts were concentrated in the Ngäbe-Bugle indigenous areas within Bocas del Toro, where he helped with filling prescriptions, distributing crucial medications, and providing emotional support to patients and their families. This unplanned trip reshaped his life's trajectory, as Aiden mentioned, "I was helping people… I felt like a hero. I'll forever be doing this; I love the medical missions."
A Mission in the Dominican Republic
Aiden recently traveled to the Dominican Republic alongside his brother Ethan. The mission focused on assisting the community of Batey El Soco in San Pedro de Macoris. Together, the Fiterstein brothers undertook tasks such as sorting medications, conducting ophthalmology tests, and establishing pop-up clinics in local areas. Aiden also played a role in training locals on vital health issues, including malaria, dengue fever, and the importance of vaccinations. For his brother Ethan, a high school freshman, participating was enlightening, especially during the optometry sessions. "Helping people, especially during the optometry sessions," Ethan reflected, "was a really nice feeling when [patients] were given glasses and they got to see for the first time."
Leadership through One World Surgery
The mission to the Dominican Republic was organized by One World Surgery, a nonprofit aiming to tackle the global health crisis by collaborating with healthcare professionals, leaders, and communities. Since 2023, One World Surgery has conducted over 40 missions, serving 20,000 patients, delivering 19,000 patient consultations, and performing 17,000 surgeries. Aiden expressed profound gratitude for the opportunity to assist and revisit these communities. "Their resilience and strength inspire me," he shared.
A Father's Perspective and Motivation
For Dr. Adam Fiterstein, witnessing the growth and commitment of his sons, Aiden and Ethan, towards humanitarian efforts has been profoundly rewarding. He acknowledges the challenges today's youth face: "It’s tough for kids these days. If you can go through high school without any feelings of anxiety or depression, you’re kind of the odd one out.” Dr. Fiterstein had once encouraged a despondent Aiden to realize his potential impact on the world. “Even as a sophomore in high school,” he had advised, “you think because you’re not out there doing surgery on someone, or championing some legislation, that you don’t have any skills, but you do.” In a world dominated by social media and its associated comparisons, learning to appreciate one's abilities and privileges can be transformative for young individuals.

Aiden envisions a future abundant in medical missions, contemplating dedicating some time post-college to focus on these endeavors. "I'm doing good things," he concluded, "and [through that] I'm finding inner peace with myself." Exploring foreign cultures and contributing to global health are intriguing prospects that drive Aiden towards a future enriched by continued service and exploration.
