After Hurricane Melissa ravaged western Jamaica, leaving communities grappling with damaged infrastructure and disrupted healthcare services, a group of dedicated medical professionals stepped forward with a mission grounded in compassion, service, and national pride. For Dr. Dahlia Blake, the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa was personal. As a daughter of Jamaica, she believed in a social responsibility to aid her homeland in overcoming the storm's impact, particularly on Jamaica's healthcare system. "As a physician and an educator, it was imperative for me to address the health needs of those impacted," Dr. Blake shared.
The mission was scheduled from March 23 to 29, 2026, reflecting a deep commitment to restoring health services in the areas where they were most disrupted. Dr. Blake's passion for aiding her community was particularly evident in her focus on Westmoreland, the parish where she was born and raised.
Comprehensive Care Across Westmoreland and Beyond
The team extended their efforts beyond Westmoreland, recognizing that the hurricane's impact was widespread, affecting community health centers especially in St. James parish. Barrett Town Health Centre, the site of Dr. Blake's 2024 Day of Service Health Project, was included in the mission, supported by Memorial Healthcare System in Hollywood, Florida.
Hundreds of Jamaicans benefited from this initiative, receiving free medical care that encompassed general adult and pediatric services, mental health support, and essential health screenings.
Meeting Immediate and Ongoing Needs
The need for medical assistance was immediate and overwhelming. Many residents had gone without medical care since the hurricane struck, resulting in a backlog of undiagnosed conditions and untreated illnesses. "Patients often said, 'You are the first doctor since Hurricane Melissa that I have seen,' and 'Thank you for coming and providing such good care,'" Dr. Blake recalled, underscoring the impact of the mission.
The medical team focused on providing continuous care by addressing acute conditions, managing chronic illnesses, and offering preventive health checks such as hypertension and diabetes screenings. They treated patients across a wide age range, from infants as young as two weeks to nonagenarians, each with their own set of health challenges exacerbated by the hurricane.

In addition to physical health needs, the team was acutely aware of the mental health impact of such a disaster. Many community members suffered from sleep disturbances and anxiety, conditions the team worked to address through counseling and support.
A critical component of the mission was patient education. "We took every opportunity to educate patients about their conditions and medications," Dr. Blake explained. Education was key to promoting primary and secondary prevention, vital for the long-term health of these communities.
Collaborative Efforts with Local Healthcare Providers
The success of the mission was facilitated by a strong collaboration between the visiting medical team and local healthcare providers. Integration with Jamaican doctors, nurses, and health workers was seamless, enabling the team to maximize their impact during their short stay.
Serving as the only physicians available at Barrett Town Health Centre, the team treated 38 patients in a single day. At Bluefields Health Centre, they attended to 48 patients over two days, while a staggering 116 patients were seen at Savanna-la-Mar Health Centre after stepping in for four sick local doctors.

Dr. Blake sees missions like these as vital to strengthening healthcare systems and bridging healthcare gaps by increasing access and capacity for underserved populations. "They provide much-needed relief for overworked doctors and nurses, especially following a disaster like Hurricane Melissa," she noted.
Beyond the immediate care provided, the mission embraced a broader message of unity and collaborative support that goes beyond moments of crisis. Dr. Blake emphasized the importance of forming sustainable partnerships that can help build resilient healthcare infrastructure throughout Jamaica.

Among them were Dr. Brandon Davis, a neurosurgeon focused on stroke education, Dr. Michelle-Ann Johnson Ramsay handling family practice and pediatric cases, and Dionne Blackwood, the vice-president of Primary Care & Ambulatory Services.
Lilian Mais-Hernandez, RN, played a crucial role in nursing care and medication education, while Zannabe Blair assisted in organising pharmacy operations.
Gratitude for Support and Partnership
Dr. Blake expressed profound gratitude to the many partners who made the mission possible, including the leadership of Memorial Healthcare System, regional health authorities, and charitable organisations such as Food For The Poor. Their generous donations of medications and support were crucial to the team's ability to treat numerous patients.
Special recognitions were given to key figures from Jamaica's Ministry of Health & Wellness and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade for their instrumental roles in facilitating the mission's success. Essential support from local health authorities, such as Lennox Wallace JP and Novlin Lesile Little, facilitated the mission's operations across the affected regions.
